Wayne Rooney pense que son coéquipier Cristiano Ronaldo pourrait bien faire le doublé dimanche lors de la cérémonie de la remise des trophées récompensant le Joueur de la Saison et le Jeune Joueur de la Saison.

La concurrence est rude, avec l'attaquant de Chelsa Didier Drogba, actuel meilleur buteur de la Premier League, l'emblématique capitaine des Reds de Liverpool Steven Gerrard, et le jeune talent d'Arsenal Cesc Fabregas, sans oublier bien entendu les Red Devils Ryan Giggs et Paul Scholes.

"Je pense que Ronaldo gagnera, mais il pourrait très bien remporter les deux récompenses" a déclaré Wayne; lui aussi en course pour le titre de Jeune Joueur de la Saison 2006-2007, un trophée qu'il doit certainement affectionner particulièrement après l'avoir remporté les deux saisons précédentes. "Il a été brillant toute la saison."

"J'ai voté Drogba - mais c'est seulement parce qu'on n'a pas le droit de voter pour ses coéquipiers. Mais Drogba a été fantastique cette saison, comme Cesc Fabregas, que j'ai élu pour le titre de Jeune Joueur de l'Année."

"J'espère que Ronaldo gagnera. Ce serait mérité."

Sir Alex Ferguson et Wayne Rooney se sont exprimés sur la victoire de Manchester United sur Watford (4-1) ce samedi en demi-finale de la FA Cup.

Sir Alex : "fantastique"

"Je pense que c'était une performance fantastique. Je suis très fier d'eux parce qu'après avoir du sortir Rio Ferdinand et réorganiser l'équipe, leur performance à été merveilleuse."

"On a été très courageux et quand vous voyez les gars dans le vestiaire après le match, ça vous dit que vous avez des joueurs très spéciaux. Watford est une équipe agressive, et le défi à relever était : êtes-vous prêts à mettre le pied sur le ballon? On devait relever ce défi, et les gars ont travaillé dur sur le terrain."

"Wes Brown et Gaby Heinze ont repoussé tous les centres qui arrivaient dans notre surface. Mais tant de joueurs ont fait un grand match. Wayne Rooney a été fantastique, son meilleur match cette saison. La menace qui pèse sur les adversaires venant de lui et de Cristiano Ronaldo nous donne tant de possibilités. On a mis quatre buts mais on aurait pu en mettre plus."

"Alan Smith goûte à nouveau à la vie parmi nous. Il a apporté quelque chose en plus. Son enthousiasme est contagieux, et les défenseurs détestent jouer contre lui. J'ai de la peine pour eux par moments parce qu'il est si fort et déterminé. Il mène bien la danse et se bat jusqu'au bout. Aucun doute, il fait la différence, et ça me fait plaisir pour lui."

"Et nos fans aujourd'hui, ont été absolument d'un autre monde. Parfois je ne pouvais même pas entendre mon banc quand ils me parlaient. C'était incroyable."

Rooney : "c'était dur"

"C'était un gros match et Watford nous l'a encore compliqué. On voulait commencer fort et on a réussi avec un but d'entrée (Wayne a marqué le premier but à la 7e minute, NDLR). J'ai marqué quelques buts en jouant sur les côtés donc je pense que je commencerai là au prochain match."

"Ils ont une équipe qui joue très physique et on savait qu'on aurait à bien défendre. Jusqu'à 1-1, puis après la mi-temps, on a dû se battre, et on l'a bien fait. Watford nous a mis sous pression avec de longs ballons et de longues touches, et on a été ravis de marquer juste avant la pause et de rentrer au vestiaire en menant 2-1. Et mon deuxième but a tué le match, la passe d'Alan était superbe et je ne pouvais pas manquer ça!"

"C'est pour ça qu'on joue : jouer des finales et gagner des trophées. On est ravis de jouer une finale de coupe. Espérons qu'on pourra aller aussi loin dans les autres compétitions. On marque pas mal de buts et on va chercher à continuer comme ça."

Ronaldo prolonge!
La star portugaise de Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo, a prolongé pour cinq ans son contrat à Manchester United, vendredi. Il est désormais lié jusqu'en 2012.

Cette annonce intervient au lendemain d'un article du Guardian faisant état d'un rapprochement étroit entre le Real Madrid et le milieu droit de Manchester, auteur de ses deux premiers buts en Ligue des champions, mardi contre l'AS Roma (7-1). Manchester dénonce au passage les méthodes d'approche du Real, qui ne "sont pas une manière correcte de faire des affaires", laissant entendre que le club s'était rapproché de l'entourage du joueur sans en parler au club.

"Je suis ravi. J'ai parlé de mon futur avec Alex Ferguson et tout le monde savait que j'avais envie de rester", a déclaré l'intéressé.

Manchester United, leader du Championnat d'Angleterre, peut espérer rédditer son fabuleux triplé de 1999 : Ligue des champions, Championnat, Cup.

"C'est une nouvelle fantastique et ça souligne à quel point Cristiano sait qu'il se trouve dans le bon club pour lui", a ajouté Alex Ferguson. "Sa relation avec le reste de l'équipe, le staff et les supporters est très bonne. Il est parti pour être l'un des grands joueurs de l'histoire de Manchester United."

Le coach mancunien avait déclaré samedi dernier dans L'Equipe magazine : "Je suis convaincu qu'il est bien conseillé. Ses agents savent qu'il est dans le bon club. Nous étions très éloignés au début dans la négociation, mais on s'est considérablement rapprochés. Nous avons pris conscience de ce que chacun a apporté à l'autre. Et de ce qu'il peut et va lui apporter dans les années à venir."
